5 Simple Habits for a Healthier Smile Every Day

Small Habits, Big Results

You don't need to completely change your lifestyle to achieve a healthier smile. A few simple daily habits can significantly reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

1. Brush Thoroughly Twice a Day

Brushing twice a day is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. Make sure you brush all surfaces of your teeth—the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and brush for at least two minutes each time.

An electric toothbrush can be especially helpful for removing plaque and ensuring a thorough clean.

2. Don't Skip Flossing

Your toothbrush can't reach between your teeth. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from these areas, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.

If traditional floss is difficult to use, consider floss picks or a water flosser. Flossing once a day can make a significant difference in your oral health.

3. Drink More Water

Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria throughout the day. If your community water supply is fluoridated, it can also help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities.

A simple goal is to replace one sugary drink each day with a glass of water.

4. Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods and Drinks

Sugar feeds the bacteria that cause tooth decay, while acidic beverages such as soda, sports drinks, and citrus juices can weaken enamel over time.

You don't have to eliminate these foods and drinks completely, but moderation is important. When possible, rinse your mouth with water afterward.

5. Don't Forget Your Tongue

Bacteria can accumulate on the tongue and contribute to bad breath. Gently brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper each day can help keep your mouth feeling fresh and clean.
