What Is Gum Disease — and Do You Have It?

A Silent Problem

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common oral health conditions affecting adults. What makes it particularly concerning is that it often develops without pain, especially in its early stages.

Many patients are surprised to learn they have gum disease because the warning signs can be subtle.

The Two Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is caused by plaque buildup along the gumline.

Common signs include:

  • Red, swollen, or puffy gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Tender gums

The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with professional dental cleanings and good oral hygiene habits at home.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. At this stage, the infection affects the tissues and bone that support your teeth.

Signs may include:

  • Receding gums
  • Deep pockets around the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in your bite
  • Tooth loss in severe cases

Treatment may include scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), periodontal maintenance, or referral to a gum disease specialist, depending on the severity of the condition.

Risk Factors for Gum Disease

Several factors can increase your risk, including:

  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Family history of periodontal disease
