When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

The First Visit: Earlier Than You Might Think

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday — or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. This might seem early, but there are important reasons for it.

Why So Soon?

Even baby teeth matter. They help your child chew, speak clearly, and hold space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and affect how adult teeth come in.

An early visit also helps your child get comfortable in the dental chair, reducing anxiety in future appointments.

What to Expect at the First Visit

The first appointment is usually short and simple. We'll:

  • Check existing teeth for early decay
  • Examine your child's bite and jaw
  • Clean any teeth that have come in
  • Give you guidance on brushing, diet, and thumb-sucking habits

Tips for a Positive Experience

  • Don't use fear language. Avoid phrases like "it won't hurt" — this plants the idea that it might!
  • Stay calm. Children pick up on parental anxiety.
  • Keep it positive. Reinforce how important it is to have a healthy smile.
